In May 2017, Swiss pop singer and presenter Francine Jordi was diagnosed with breast cancer. However, the 41-year-old kept the disease to herself. She made TV appearances and gave concerts without letting on. It was only this April that she spoke publicly about it for the first time. In the meantime, her body has fully recovered after an operation and chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Jordi spoke openly to Blick about how the illness has changed her as a person.

"Of course I was shocked," the singer recalled of her diagnosis in May 2017, but she was relieved that the lump in her breast was cancer in its very early stages. She discovered the tumor while applying cream before going to sleep. "I felt a bump on my skin. The next day I went to see a doctor for a check-up, and two weeks later I was already operated on," Jordi revealed in an interview with "Blick".

"Encounters with fans have given me a lot of strength"
Jordi deliberately did not make her illness public at first. Only her family and her manager were informed of her true state of health. During this time, Jordi appeared on the "Willkommen bei Carmen Nebel" show and hosted the "Silvestershow" alongside Jörg Pilawa.

To conceal her condition, she got artificial eyelashes and opted for a blonde wig. "I wanted to get on with my life as normally as possible." The encounters with her fans gave her "an incredible amount of strength during the difficult phase and carried me through this time". Nevertheless, she admitted that she almost didn't make it through some concerts due to her physical condition.

"Fear is a bad advisor"
As shocked as she was after the diagnosis, Jordi refused to allow herself to be afraid. "Fear is a bad advisor. I could have wallowed endlessly in self-pity. But that wouldn't have helped me. On the contrary: I'm convinced that it might even have made the course of the disease worse."

Jordi believes in the power of positive thinking. That is why she did not inform herself about the possible excesses of the disease, nor was she ever angry. "I couldn't blame anyone for the cancer," she said in the second part of the interview. She preferred to concentrate on the good fortune that the cancer had not left any offshoots in her body. "I took that as a gift."

Jordi regarded chemotherapy as a "friend, not an enemy"
She did not allow any information to get to her that could have brought her down. For example, she asked the oncologist not to tell her about the side effects of chemotherapy. "I began to see chemotherapy as a friend, not an enemy. I saw it as a colleague who was making my body healthy again," said Jordi.

Nevertheless, the time during chemotherapy was tough: Jordi had lost his sense of taste, and his fingers and feet had gone partially numb. "I was also out of breath very quickly, all my muscle strength disappeared and my immune system was severely impaired," said the 41-year-old.

"I didn't want any pity or advice "
However, the pop star did not go through these hardships alone. Her parents and two sisters stood by her. "We are a very strong family that has had to cope with a few strokes of fate." One thing Jordi definitely didn't want was pity and advice. That's why she didn't even tell her closest friends. She was so focused on herself that she didn't want a partner by her side. "I wanted to be completely selfish during my recovery and not have to take anyone into consideration."

"Life is not just about earning money"
Jordi is now cured of cancer. This year, she performed at the "Krone" festival in Linz in August. According to her own statement, 2017 was the most difficult year of her life. "But it was also a very instructive year." Her most important insight? "Life is not just about earning money and building an empire. On the contrary: you can also find fulfillment by simply watching a beautiful sunrise or going for a leisurely walk in the woods with friends. The latter are the things I draw a lot of strength from at the moment."
